Fall Fun Fest-2017

Blustery, rainy weather. Fall leaves carried to the ground. The environment is suitable for a cozy fire and hot tea or chocolate, a good movie or conversation.  Instead, from outside Ascension Health in Grand Rapids, MI, quiet music is billowing from the garage.  As I approach, the music gets louder. The Monster Mash, Ghostbusters and other classic spooky sounds fill the air. I hear voices of excitement, laughter and good, fun conversation rising above the music.

A look inside reveals costume dressed staff and residents, snacks, crafts and smiling faces!! This group is ready for a fun afternoon!!  Each resident is snacking on popcorn, peanuts and a chocolate chip ensemble.  Most are working on painting ceramics or chatting with staff about how they decided on their costume for the event.

Cherie picked a pumpkin headband. “It matches my pumpkin earrings, she said.” Danny chose an elf hat, “Because I love Santa.”  Linda picked skulls. “It matches my ghost painted fingernails, she enthusiastically exclaimed.” Bill chose Batman, “Because I love superheros.” In each case, the opportunity to choose their headband and costume made the day even more exciting.

The residents chose the dinner menu. Pizza was the meal of choice. Of course, breadsticks and salad accompanied their favorite. We can’t forget the Eyeball Punch, a well-suited choice for the event. Finally, dessert. Dirt pie, as Bill shows it to the camera in our gallery below. Chocolate pudding, crushed Oreos and gummy worms. “Worms in Dirt” may not look or sound appetizing, but the taste is delicious!

As each person departed to end their fun-filled day, each was given a Goody bag filled with sugar free treats and additional activities to do at home. Each left with a smile and an eager outlook for our next event over Thanksgiving weekend!!
